A message to high school teachers from a professor at Tohoku University

My name is Steven Mitchell, the writer of ATLANTIS Higher Learning English Expression I Advanced. Recently, I had the chance to speak to a professor of medical education at Tohoku University in Miyagi Prefecture. I asked the professor what is important to be a successful medical student in his university. Surprisingly, he was not so interested in high test scores. What he stressed was the ability to communicate, both in Japanese and in English. The professor went on to say that a lack of communication skills is a contributing factor to some medical students dropping out of university.

The professor currently teaches a biology course for first year medical and dental students. I was surprised to learn that the textbook which he uses is all English. I asked the professor why he uses an all English biology textbook when the national exam to become a doctor or dentist is in Japanese. He said that it is important to think beyond the national exam. In order to do research, attend international conferences, and make effective presentations, the ability to communicate in English is essential.

I asked the professor if he had a message for high school teachers. He urged teachers to think beyond the university entrance exams and focus not only on test scores, but also on the ability to communicate, both in Japanese and in English.

Of course, being able to communicate well in English goes beyond the medical field. Whatever path high school students decide to take in life, no one can deny that having good English communication skills will be a huge benefit, both professionally and personally. It is true that teachers and students are under great pressure to get good test results. In English class, there are so many grammar points that must be covered and so little time to do it in. ATLANTIS Higher Learning English Expression I Advanced strikes a very good balance between test scores and communication ability. We firmly believe that students cannot truly learn and be able to use English grammar with isolated, out of context sentences. For this reason, in our textbook, we have dedicated two pages to each grammar point. These two pages can be done relatively quickly, and the students can not only understand the grammar from a technical point of view, but also be able to use it to express themselves and communicate naturally in English. This balance between test scores and communicative ability is what ATLANTIS Higher Learning English Expression I Advanced was built on.
